Take advantage of the month that gives longevity, health, and merit

(Purushottam Maasa: May 17, 2026 to June 15, 2026)

There is great glory of Purushottam Maasa. It is also called the intercalary month and ‘Mala Maasa’. The protector and enjoyer of the fruits of its merits is Bhagavaan Purushottam, hence the name of this month is ‘Purushottam maasa’. One who does not take advantage of this month (by doing meritorious acts) will beget sorrow, poverty, and grief. This month has also been considered the giver of health and merit because God has given His name to this extra lunar month. The religious merit that one earns by bathing (every day) in the Ganges for 10,000 years or by taking a bath in the SiÒhastha Kumbh that comes every 12 years, are earned by taking a bath, remembering God, and meditating on God in the morning in the Purushottam month.

Keeping fasts, observing vows, snaana (ritual bath in a sacred river), doing charity or worshiping, etc., are done only for the purpose of attaining God, in the intercalary month. They attain imperishable merits and all the evils of those who observe vows are destroyed.

A new lesson

You will bathe in the morning, but I am giving you a new lesson that will raise that bath to a high position. I am telling you the method which you will definitely do in the Purushottam month, but I would like you to do it every day.

If you are bathing in the Ganges, Narmadaa or any pilgrimage, stand navel deep in the water and taking the water in the hollowed palm of your right hand, while looking at it, repeat ‘Om’ 100 times, then drink that water. If the water of the river is not potable or you are not at a pilgrimage, take home some of the water in a bowl and do this after taking a bath in the morning. Or before eating, consecrate some lukewarm water filled in a bowl by repeating ‘Om’ 100 times, and then drink that water intermittently during the meal. Then see what happens! Start it from today itself. Repeat ‘Om’ at least 100 times; it is better if you repeat it 200 times.

This water of yours will become very efficacious. It will give longevity, health, and nourishment; and will remove your defects and sins, and help make God appear before you. If you repeat Om to cure only a disease or sore throat, then it is an insult meted out to Omkaar. Try it today; who knows what will happen tomorrow.

Dos and don’ts in the intercalary month:

It has been ordained to do good deeds during the intercalary month. All efforts with the intention of worldly gains, the inauguration of new homes, shops, digging ponds, wells, etc., and marriages are prohibited during this month. Right now, during the rainy season, eating food that is heavy to digest, like almonds, cashew nuts, maavaa (milk cooked down to fudge-like consistency), etc., and staying awake till late at night is not good for health. Add a little dry ginger powder to the powder of Indian gooseberry and sugar candy (Aamlaa Churna). Occasionally, toss a little of it into the mouth from the palm of your hand. It gives strength and pacifies the Vaata.

God is bliss-nature, knowledge-nature, consciousness-nature, and Àtman. Meditation, satsang, and chanting of the divine name are very beneficial to begin relishing the sweetness of God.

“The divine name repeated, diffuses joy in all the ten directions.” (Shri Raama Charita Maanasa, Bala Kanda: 27.1)

Therefore, resorting to japa, satsang, etc., brings great happiness.
